An exchange, not a parade
In uniform, community is built in. Same mission, same dirt, same dark humor at zero-dark-thirty. You don’t have to explain yourself — the people next to you already get it.
Then you leave. The structure falls away. The group chat thins out. Errands replace formations. A lot of veterans describe the same hole: not always trauma, not always politics — just the missing tribe. Civilians who care can feel a version of that too: rooms online that are loud, empty, or fake.
Grumpy Vet Exchange is a small attempt to fill part of that void. Not a clinic. Not a parade. A place where the uniform comes off and the room stays open — live shows, friends we vouch for, house rules with a smile, and a culture that expects you to show up like a human being.
The live stream is one door in. The roster of friends, the comments, the causes we point to — that’s the building. You don’t have to buy anything to belong here. You do have to respect the room.
While you served
Shared purpose, shared risk, shared jokes. The unit was the social OS whether you asked for it or not.
When you leave
That OS logs off. Family and work matter — and still, a lot of people miss the easy belonging of the formation.
