Grumpy's Take
Straight talk, no hype
- Fed Wednesday, PCE Thursday. Two days that can move metals. A pause is expected, so the real mover is what they say about December. If you're buying or selling this week, check spot that day, not off a number from Monday night.
- Gold's back at $4,000 but hasn't won anything yet. Oil and yields are fighting over it. Bouncing off a three-month low is not a trend. Don't chase it, and don't panic about it either.
- Silver is sitting on the line. $53 is the support analysts keep pointing at, and the trend is still down. Cheap can always get cheaper, so buy what you'd be fine holding if it does.
- How Grumpy prices it: start with melt, then add the premium. A Silver Eagle melts at $53.84 tonight, and the coin typically trades a few dollars over spot. Premiums move with demand, not just with spot.
- Junk silver math: spot × 0.7234 = melt per $1 face of 90%. Tonight that's $38.95, or $3,894.79 for a $100 face bag. Know that before anyone quotes you.
- Small gold costs more per ounce. A 1/10 oz melts at $401.15, but fractional gold carries bigger premiums over melt than a full ounce. Compare cost per ounce, not sticker price.
