Melt ≠ Price Tag
Melt is spot × metal content — nothing more. Real-world prices add dealer spreads and premiums, which vary by product, condition and demand.
Melt values are spot-only estimates based on spot prices at 8:10 AM ET and exclude dealer spreads/premiums. 90% silver uses 0.7234 oz per $1 face.
Today's Headlines
- Fed holds, but two voted to hikeThe Fed kept rates at 3.75%–4.00% in a 10–2 vote, with two members wanting a hike now. Chair Kevin Warsh left December open, and markets price roughly an 80–83% chance of a December increase. — CNBC, Economies.com
- Inflation day: PCE and GDP at 8:30 AM ETSeptember PCE (the Fed's preferred inflation gauge) and Q3 GDP land together. Consensus is about 3.6% headline PCE, 3.1% core and 3.2% GDP growth. A hot print could push gold under $4,000. — Capital Street FX, CNBC
- Silver takes the bigger hit; gold on track for a 2nd monthly lossSilver is down more than 2% versus about 1% for gold, as its industrial side makes it more sensitive to growth and rate fears. Gold is down roughly 2.5% in October. — Economies.com, Capital Street FX

Grumpy's Take
Straight talk, no hype
- Selling this week? Ask for the bid as a percent of melt. A $100 face bag of 90% is worth $3,797 in metal right now. If a dealer offers 95% of melt, that's about $3,607; at 90% it's about $3,417. Same bag, $190 apart. Make them say the percent out loud.
- Don't sell a proof for melt. That 2026-W Proof Silver Eagle holds $52.49 of silver but went out the Mint door at $173, and it's 90% sold out. Box, COA and condition carry real money. Anyone offering melt for a collector coin is making a margin on you.
- Ratio check: 76.7 and climbing. Silver fell more than twice as hard as gold today, so an ounce of gold now buys about 1.3 more ounces of silver than yesterday. If you swap between metals, that's a number to watch, not a reason to panic.
- Old silver dollars, new math. 20 Morgans hold about $812 in silver today. Common dates trade near that; key dates and high grades don't care what spot did this morning.
- The calendar isn't done. The Fed parked any move until after next week's midterms, and gold closes out its month Friday. Expect choppy prices through early November and price-check before every deal.
