Grumpy's Take
Straight talk, no hype
- Stacker's math on a down week. $1,000 bought about 18.6 oz of silver at Wednesday morning's $53.64. At $50.10 it buys about 20.0 oz, before premiums. If you were going to buy anyway, that's 1.3 free ounces. If you weren't, a sale price alone isn't a reason to start.
- $50 is a round number, not a floor. Buyers love round numbers, so expect bounces around $50. But the 52-week low is $47.61. Don't bet the rent that it holds.
- Small budget? Junk silver scales. A $10 face roll of 90% dimes holds 7.23 oz, about $362 in metal today. You can add a roll at a time and never overpay for a single big piece.
- Palladium just lost $1,000. It's down about 40% this year. Unless you know that market cold, leave it to the catalytic-converter crowd and stick with silver and gold.
- Month closes today, midterms Tuesday. Month-end trading gets jumpy and news can move metals over the weekend. If you're quoted a price Friday afternoon, ask if it holds Monday.
