Grumpy's Take
Selling on a red day? Do it right
- Price your pile before you leave the house. A coffee can with $25 face of 90% quarters holds about 18.1 oz of silver, roughly $896 in metal at this morning's $49.56. Write that number down. Every offer you hear gets measured against it.
- Ask every counter the same question. One shop quotes per ounce, another per dollar face, a third throws out one lump number. Ask each for "per $1 face" or "percent of melt" and you can compare in ten seconds. Get three bids. Phone calls are free.
- Government coins move easier than mystery rounds. The WGC says retail bar buying fell 19% last quarter, but official coins were up 12%. Eagles and Maples are known to every buyer. Odd bars and generic rounds can draw a thinner bid when retail sits on its hands.
- Pull the keepers before you sell by the pound. Check dates and mint marks first. A key date or a sharp uncirculated piece can be worth more to a collector than to the melt pot. And don't scrub anything. Cleaning can wipe out collector value.
- Polls close tonight. Your coins don't have to. Silver is down about 2% this morning and the results can push metals either way by tomorrow. Unless you need the cash today, waiting a day costs you nothing.
